Product description

The Château Brane-Cantenac vineyard, located in the Margaux appellation on the left bank of Bordeaux, traces its roots back to the 18th and 19th centuries.Under its former name, Château Gorce (or Gorce-Guy), it was already a renowned winery at that time, and in 1833 the estate was purchased by Baron Hector de Brane—known as the “Napoleon of the Vine.”.It was he who gave it its new name in 1838—“Brane-Cantenac”—by combining his surname with the name of the village of Cantenac.

In 1855, the estate was classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé (“Second Growth”) in the Médoc region, confirming its importance and high quality.Over the years, it underwent several changes in ownership until it finally came into the hands of the Henri Lurton family (who currently manages it), which undertook modernization efforts: improving drainage, adjusting vine planting density, selecting crops, and installing modern tanks and barrels.

The vineyard covers approximately 75 hectares, densely planted with grapevines on soil typical of Margaux: a gravelly, sandy, and clayey subsoil that ensures excellent drainage and promotes the ripening of varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. She is known for her meticulousness—a case in point is a comparable study of the use of different oak varieties (Russian vs. French) in the cellar, which has already been implemented at Château Brane-Cantenac as part of the winemaking improvement process.

Baron de Brane is the “second wine” of Château Brane-Cantenac—which means it is made from younger vines or plots that are less carefully selected than those designated for the “grand vin,” but it still comes from the same estate and benefits from the expertise and terroir of this exceptional vineyard. The 2018 vintage combines the classic Margaux style—elegant, balanced, and refined—with good structure and fruit potential.

Appearance: a deep purple color with ruby highlights; a distinct density along the rim of the glass, indicating good concentration.

Aroma: it releases aromas of black currant, blackberry, and ripe cherry, enriched with notes of forest floor, tobacco, cedar, and a subtle scent of violets—all of which contribute to the refined elegance typical of Margaux.

Taste: juicy fruits (cherry, black currant) appear on the palate, the tannins are well-formed and smooth, the wine’s structure is fresh, with a mineral undertone and an elegant finish featuring hints of coffee and smoky spices.

Food pairings: This wine pairs perfectly with roast beef tenderloin, duck with cranberry sauce, game dishes, aged cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère, as well as grilled dishes and richly seasoned wild mushrooms in cream.
