The Macallan 77yo

When the owner of the Macallan distillery announced the release of The Red Collection in the fall of 2020, it seemed like a finished collection. That nothing more can be added to it. Well, because how could? Six absolutely unique, even unbelievable whisky editions, the youngest of which is 40 years old, and the oldest... is just the oldest. At the time, The Red Collection Macallan 78yo was the oldest whisky ever to see the light of day in bottled form.

It turns out, however, that the potential hidden in the warehouses of Scotland's most exclusive single malt whisky brand should not be underestimated. For here is Macallan announcing the release of the next item in the already iconic Red Collection, The Macallan 77yo.

The Macallan 77yo is a whisky from the 1945 distillation, bottled in 2022 as a 43.2% vol. beverage. As with the other six items in the collection, we know neither what barrels they came from, the size of the edition, nor any other details. One guess is that the barrel - or barrels - in which the aged Macallan was matured was made of European oak, used in the mid-20th century to transport sherry. What we do know for sure, however, is that it will soon be on sale at The Macallan Estate Boutique and through a network of specialty stores partnering with the brand, including Travel Retail. Announced price of a single bottle The Macallan 77yo is £65,000.

The new whisky is offered in a decorative case made of European oak, the same as that used for many years to mature whisky produced at the Macallan distillery. Inside, the box is lined with red leather from the Scottish manufacturer, Bridge of Weir Leather. The Macallan 77yo was selected by Kirsteen Campbell, who holds the prestigious position of Master Whisky Maker at the Macallan distillery.

The Red Collection consists primarily of three whiskies, representing the oldest available permanent editions available anywhere in the Scottish distilling industry. They are The Macallan 40yo, 50yo and 60yo. This fairly constant offering is supplemented by strictly limited, one-off series of extremely old distillates. In 2020, when The Red Collection debuted, they were The Macallan 71yo, 74yo and 78yo. Now joining the collection is The Macallan 77yo from 1945.

In May 2021, the three oldest editions, part of the original set The Macallan Red Collection, were added to the House of Whisky Online's offerings. At the time of preparing the current material, only the 78yo edition remains available for purchase, but the House of Whisky Online boasts an extremely rich collection of The Macallan, in which every collector will find something to adorn his or her collection.
