Ten-year door to heaven
Heaven's Door Spirits is a company in which one of the partners is the famous American poet and singer, Nobel Prize winner Bob Dylan. The company's name is a direct reference to one of the most famous songs written and recorded by Dylan (recorded not only by him), "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." The company has been in operation since the beginning of 2018 and has a string of editions, released under the co-brand Heaven's Door. These are largely liquors sourced from other producers, selected and bottled by a company associated with Dylan, but as of 2019 there is also a Heaven's Door distillery based in the former Elm Street Church in Nashville.
Heaven's Door Spirits has just announced the launch of a new collection collectively named Decade Series. These are to be limited editions of American whiskey, each of which will be a ten-year liquor. Due to the different production technology of American whiskey (including bourbon), as well as maturation conditions extremely different from those in Scotland, spirits from overseas usually do not spend long periods of maturation in barrels, as is sometimes the norm in Scotland. Hence, ten-year-old whiskey is already a kind of rarity in that market and in those conditions.
The first whisky in the announced series will be Heaven's Door Decade Series Release #1, beverage at 50% vol. It is a straight bourbon whiskey with a high rye content, matured in American oak barrels (Quercus alba) for 10 years. According to Heaven's Door's master buyer, this is a whiskey the world hasn't tasted before - Tennessee bourbon with as much as 22% rye in the sludge. Charcoal filtration, so characteristic of Jack Daniels whiskey, was also abandoned. According to the manufacturer's announcement, this whiskey is expected to offer notes of maple syrup, fudge, poached pears and bananas in its bouquet, while accents of toffee and dark chocolate are expected on the palate.
Heaven's Door Decade Series Release #1 is now available in specialty liquor stores in the U.S., the price of a single bottle is $99. No information was given about possible availability in other markets, including European ones.
