Glenfarclas Distillery has been in the hands of the Grant family since 1865. The brand currently sells over 800,000 bottles per year and continues to grow.
2014 saw the first 60-year-old release, the oldest in Grant’s storied history. Distilled in 1953, the whisky came from a first-fill butt sherry cask, bottled at natural alcohol (43.3% abv). The release consisted of 360 crystal decanters presented in a hexagonal carton, a nod to six generations of Grant. George Grant, a representative of the sixth generation of the family, described this extraordinary whisky as follows:
"A nectar of an incredibly dark, mahogany colour, with a surprisingly lively aromatic palette, full of dried fruit, Demerara sugar, spices and tannins absorbed from the oak over many decades. Our taste buds are caressed by rich notes of sherry, intense flavour of molasses and pleasant bitterness of espresso. I have never encountered a longer finish - 20 minutes after the last swallowed drop I still felt in my mouth the subtle harmony of flavours of this magical whisky."
