Glenrothes Distillery was founded in 1878 in Rothes (Speyside), but production stared the following year in May.
Glenrothes malt has been closely associated with Cutty Sark brand; it is also a major component of Famous Grouse. Currently The Edrington Group owns the distillery, but Berry Bros. & Rudd, the oldest British wine merchants, own the Glenrothes brand. The 1979 Vintage is a special single cask bottling. It contains whisky distilled 100 years after the distillery started operation, aged in a single sherry butt and bottled at cask strength (very unusual for Glenrothes) with an outrun of 502 bottles.
Nose: sweet and floral, acacia blossom, dry rose petals, oranges, pineapple, apricots, raisins, honey, milk chocolate, cinnamon, hazelnuts, touch of leather and oak.
