Kilbeggan, founded 1757, is a serious contender to “the oldest Irish distillery” title. The distillery went silent in 1953, in the mid 1980s reopened as whiskey museum and distillation was resumed in the spring of 2007 under the Teeling family ownership.
Today Kilbeggan is part of Beam Suntory and produces around 80,000 liters of malt spirit per annum. The Kilbeggan brand launch predates the reactivation of the distillery, it is a blend of single malt and single grain whiskeys distilled at Cooley Distillery and aged in white American oak barrels. The malt content is about 30%, the grain whiskey has been distilled in column still from mash composed of 94% corn and 6% malted barley.
Nose: light, vanilla, caramel, hard candy, honey, sweet cereals, lemon peel, hints of hay and fresh oak.
Palate: smooth, toasted grains, vanilla, caramel, buttered popcorn, baked apples and delicate nutty and oaky notes.
Finish: medium long, with notes of vanilla, lemon peel, apples, roasted peanuts and oak.
