Product description

Château Cos d’Estournel stands on the border between Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, on the famous “Cos Hill,” where the gravel of the Garonne mingles with clay, and the vineyard looks out over the Gironde as if it were a private mirror of light. Its founder, Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, was a visionary and an eccentric; because of his trade ties with India, he was nicknamed the “Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe.”.Hence the pagodas and Oriental motifs in the courtyard—now the estate’s hallmark—and the legend of “wines returning from India”: barrels sent to Mumbai or Kolkata and then back to Europe, because the journey supposedly “refined” the wine.Modernity has arrived here in the shadow of the exotic: a gravity-fed winery hidden beneath pagodas allows for winemaking without pumping—a gentle process designed to preserve the purity of the fruit.

The 2019 vintage was aged in French oak for about 18 months, with nearly 55% of that time spent in new barrels—this is now the winery’s signature style: elegance over flash, structure over oak aging. The blend is classic: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, which in 2019 produced a wine with excellent concentration as well as a clear expression of fruit.

Appearance: deep ruby with purple highlights, clear and dense in the glass.

Aroma: taut black currants and blackberries, graphite, pencil, and crushed slate; over time, notes of coffee, nutmeg, tobacco leaf, and delicate spices emerge—echoing the oak and the terroir of Saint-Estèphe.

Taste: full-bodied yet balanced; fine-grained, ripe tannins build a slow, long finish with a mineral “coolness”; excellent freshness carries the fruit, promising a long life in the cellar.

Food pairings: roasted entrecôte or côte de boeuf with rosemary, tenderloin in pepper sauce, game (deer, wild boar), slow-simmered beef stew, and for the cheese board—aged Comté or a Tomme with an Alpine character.
