There are several estates in Pauillac that, even from a distance, look like they hold the promise of a classic Médoc—and Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is among those that more than live up to that promise.The story begins as far back as the 17th century, when the vast Rauzan estate was divided between two branches of the family, and in 1850.Two “sisters” were established: Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse.Five years later, Baron was awarded the rank of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification.In the 20th century, the estate went through a difficult period, until 1987.AXA Millésimes purchased it; that’s when a major renovation began—from a new, spectacular cuverie and remodeled cellars to the restoration of the château itself.A distinctive feature of the estate is the shimmering body of water in front of the facade—beneath it lies a barrel aging cellar, a symbol that combines glamour with technical precision.Today, the AXA Millésimes team, led by Christian Seely, oversees the entire operation, and Pichon Baron is once again considered a “super-second”—second in the rankings, but first in ambition.

The vineyard is located on gravelly, well-drained soils just above the Gironde estuary, in the heart of Pauillac.This terroir naturally favors Cabernet Sauvignon, and the vineyard layout across the entire 75-hectare estate reflects this advantage.From these oldest plots—the “heart of the Pichon hill”—comes the Grand Vin, Château Pichon Baron; in vintages with a more varied character, some of the grapes are used for the second wines: Les Tourelles de Longueville and Les Griffons de Pichon Baron.The style of the house is often described as more robust and sleek than that of the neighbor across the street (Comtesse), but it always keeps its finger on the pulse of elegance.

The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux was cooler and more challenging, which in Pauillac resulted in lower alcohol levels, crispness, and a distinct “old-school” style.At Pichon Baron, the selection process was very rigorous, and the blend achieved a record-high (for the estate's style) proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon—about.88–89%, blended with Merlot—resulting in a wine that is lean in structure but impressive in its core concentration, tension, and length.As usual, the wine was aged primarily in new French oak barrels (approx..70–80%) for about.18 months; the final alcohol content ranges from 12.9% to 13.0%.The harvest took place in late September and early October.This is a vintage that rewards patience and showcases Pauillac in a style reminiscent of graphite, not marmalade.

Appearance: a deep, ruby-navy color with a delicate brick-red hue at the rim, indicating its evolution.

Aroma: ripe black currant, plum, and blackberry intertwine with notes of cedar, leather, tobacco, and graphite; over time, hints of coffee, chocolate, and dried herbs emerge.

Taste: full-bodied, elegant, with velvety tannins and well-integrated oak; dominated by dark fruits, cedar, and spices, and rounded off by a long, harmonious finish with a hint of minerality.

Food pairings: perfect with roasted lamb with rosemary, beef roast, game (venison, wild boar), as well as aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego.
