The Antinori family is a name that has achieved almost mythical status in the world of wine.Since 1385—that is, for over six hundred years—successive generations of the Marchesi Antinori family have been involved in viticulture and winemaking.Today, the company is led by 26 people.generation, and the Antinoris are considered among the architects of the “Super-Tuscan” revolution—wines that, in the 1970s.In the 20th century, they rejected the classification systems of Chianti Classico and showed the world a modern, ambitious side of Tuscany.

Solaia is produced in the heart of the Tenuta Tignanello estate, located between the Greve and Pesa valleys, right in the center of the Chianti Classico appellation.The entire estate covers 319 hectares, about half of which is planted with vineyards.It is here, on a steep slope with limestone-and-shale soil (known as “alberese” and “galestro”), that Antinori’s two most famous vineyards are located—Tignanello and Solaia.The Solaia vineyard itself covers about 20 hectares, and thanks to its southwest exposure, it is bathed in sunlight for most of the day—which is where its name comes from: “the sunny one.”.

The first vintage of this wine was produced in 1978.Unlike Tignanello, which is based on Sangiovese with the addition of Cabernet varieties, Solaia is the reverse of that concept: it is Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc and a hint of the Tuscan spirit in the form of Sangiovese.The wine is produced only in the best vintages—there are years when Solaia does not reach the market at all, which only enhances its prestige.It gained international fame when the 1997 vintage was named “Wine of the Year” by *Wine Spectator*.

The 2019 vintage was produced under ideal conditions for the slow and harmonious ripening of the fruit.The winter was cool, and the spring was rainy, which delayed the growing season, but since the end of August, the weather has been stable and warm, with no extremes.The harvest began in late September and lasted until mid-October, and the winemaking took place in small, conical vats.After malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for about 18 months in new French oak barriques.The result is a full-bodied and elegant blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (about 73–75%), complemented by Sangiovese (15–20%) and a small amount of Cabernet Franc.

In the glass, the 2019 Solaia displays a deep ruby color.Aromas of red fruits—raspberries, mulberries, and cherries—intertwine with notes of apricot and blood orange.In the background, there are notes of rose, licorice, coffee, dark chocolate, and a slight herbal hint.The palate is rich yet incredibly silky, with subtle, refined tannins and a long, complex finish.This is one of those wines that combines power and elegance without losing its Tuscan identity.

Appearance: Solaia 2019 has a deep ruby color with violet highlights, indicative of the wine’s youth and concentration.In the glass, it appears dense and oily, leaving distinct tears on the sides.

Aroma: The bouquet opens with red fruits—raspberry, cherry, and mulberry—which gradually give way to notes of apricot, blood orange, and rose petals.The background is made up of notes of coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, and fresh mint.

Taste: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety, and silky, with ripe, fine tannins.A long, complex finish that combines the elegance of fruit with spicy notes of spices and a subtle mineral touch.

Food Pairings: It pairs perfectly with beef tenderloin, lamb, and venison in demi-glace sauces.It also beautifully brings out the aroma of aged cheeses such as pecorino and parmigiano-reggiano.
