Product description
The original formula for Citadelle gin was developed in Dunkirk in 1771 and four years later King Louis XVI commissioned the construction of a distillery to produce it in the citadel there.
More than 200 years later, Alexander Gabriel, the founder of Maison Ferrand, after studying the history of Citadelle gin, decided to revive the brand. Maison Ferrand is a cognac producer, and its headquarters are located in that region, and the idea of distilling gin sparked fierce opposition from local legislators. It took Gabriel more than five years to fight them and obtain the appropriate permits, and finally in 1995, the modern Citadelle gin set out to conquer the market, representing a category unknown at the time. Its formula is based on triple-distilled wheat spirit and 19 botanical ingredients: juniper berries, almonds, angelica, cardamom, cinnamon bark, cinnamon, coriander, cubeb pepper, cumin, fennel, grains of paradise, lemon and orange peel, licorice, nutmeg, anise, savory and violets. In 2015, Citadelle Gin won a double gold medal at the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco.
Citadelle is a very complex gin, one could say a gin symphony, in which, under the baton of juniper, floral, citrus and spicy sections work together beautifully, the latter leading in the grand finale. We recommend it in Moonlight and Martini cocktails and with Fever Tree tonics.
