Bushmills has been in third place in the Irish whiskey sales ranking for years – in 2022 it recorded sales of over 12 million bottles, while the category leader, Jameson, sold 133 million bottles, and number 2, Tullamore Dew, sold 17 million.
Since 2014, the distillery has been owned by Casa Cuervo, the producer of José Cuervo tequila, which has expanded the facility, or rather built a new distillery; their combined production capacity is 9 million liters of distillate per year. In 2023, two super-premium versions of Bushmills single malt, 25 and 30 years old, were launched. The first, after four years of maturation in bourbon and sherry barrels, finished for over two decades in port pipe barrels. The whisky was bottled at 46% abv without chill filtration.
Nose: raisins, stewed plums, black cherries, blood oranges, roasted almonds, milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla, a touch of cinnamon, notes of leather and oak.
Taste: consistent with the aroma, black cherries, dried plums and apricots, raisins, roasted nuts and almonds, marzipan, caramel, milk chocolate, white pepper, leather and oak.
Finish: medium long, with notes of cherry jam, chocolate-covered raisins, nougat, cinnamon, a touch of pepper and oak.
