Catoctin Creek Distillery was founded in 2009 by Becky and Scott Harris. Based in Purcellville, Loudoun County, Virginia, Catoctin is the county’s first distillery since Prohibition.
The name “Catoctin” comes from the language of the Kittocton people who historically inhabited the area, and is said to mean “place where deer live.” The whiskey produced there is distilled from 100% rye and aged for typically three years in barrels made of local and Minnesota oak; it is also certified kosher. In 2015, Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Distillers Edition won a gold medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition.
Aroma: toasted rye bread, salted caramel, vanilla, white pepper, anise, cinnamon, cardamom, dried fruit, notes of black tea and oak.
Flavor: wholemeal bread with butter, caramel, vanilla, milk chocolate, dried dates, cinnamon, cloves, anise and mint leaf.
Finish: medium long, with notes of wholemeal, green apples, caramel, cinnamon, fennel and oak.
