Each year Bruichladdich Distillery releases another limited edition of Octomore, the world’s most “smoky and peaty” whisky.
The 14th edition from 2023 consisted of three versions, for which master distiller Adam Hannett selected whiskies distilled from malt with a phenol concentration of 128.9 to 214 ppm. Octomore Edition: 14.3 was distilled in 2017 from Concerto barley harvested the previous year from the Octomore farm and malted to a phenol concentration of 214.2 ppm. The whisky was aged for five years in first-fill bourbon barrels (50%) and refill wine barrels (50%) and bottled at 61.4% abv.
Nose: lots of smoke and ash, bread dough, pears, peaches, apricots, milk fudge, honeycomb, milk chocolate, notes of potpourri and hay.
Palate: peat smoke, sweet breakfast cereal, vanilla, toffee, roasted nuts, apples, cherries, pears, a dash of white pepper and toasted oak.
Finish: long, malty and strongly smoky, with notes of vanilla, caramel, heather honey, walnuts and soot.
