In July 2023 we received the fourteenth edition of Octomore.
It includes three 5-year-old whiskies, of which the 14.2 presented here was produced from the same batch of malted barley used in 14.1. – a 2017 distillation of 100% Scottish barley (Concerto variety) harvested a year earlier and malted to a phenol concentration of 128.9 ppm. While the maturation process of the 14.1 release used only first-fill bourbon barrels, the Octomore 14.2 presented here was aged in Oloroso sherry barrels (40%), first-fill Amarone barrels (16%) and second-fill (44%). After four years, they were blended and the whisky was placed in Pauillac wine barrels for an additional year.
Nose: smoky-wine, barley malt, dried plums and cranberries, red currants, black pepper, cinnamon, pine needles, leather, notes of pipe tobacco and charred oak.
Palate: peat smoke, grilled pork neck, dark chocolate, dried dark fruits, smoked plums, black pepper, notes of leather and oak tannins.
Finish: quite long, with notes of peat smoke, dark chocolate, cherries, plums, sea salt, a touch of pepper and oak.
