Yuza, one of the youngest and smallest Japanese distilleries, commenced operations in November 2018.
Based in Yamagata Prefecture, the distillery is owned by Kinryu Company, a producer of sake and shochu. Yuzu is equipped with two small copper stills made by Scottish company Forsyths Ltd. and produces only whiskey. The Yuza Distillery First Edition, aged exclusively in bourbon barrels, was released in February 2022 and immediately won a gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge. The second edition presented here, from November 2022, contains whiskey distilled between February and July 2019, aged in bourbon and sherry barrels and bottled at 62% abv, natural color and unchill-filtered. 8,500 bottles were released.
Nose : red apples, pears, peaches, bananas, vanilla pudding, milk fudge, lemon iced tea and a pinch of cinnamon.
Taste: intensely fruity, pears, peaches, nectarines, honeydew melon, fig jam, vanilla, sponge cake, traces of candied ginger and oak.
Finish: quite long, with notes of ripe orchard fruit, vanilla cream, toffee, ginger, cinnamon and oak.
