Compass Box Whisky Company was founded in 2000 by John Glaser, previously marketing director of UDV, the previous incarnation of Diageo.
The company specializes in blended whiskies and has a reputation for disclosing details about their formula. The Peat Monster debuted in 2003 and remains the company’s signature. Its formula changes slightly from edition to edition, with the cask strength version presented here being: Williamson 35% (American oak), Caol Ila 34.2% (American oak), 17.9% (bourbon, refill), 11.8 (sherry puncheon) and 1.1% Highland malt blend (French oak, heavily toasted). This limited edition (9,126 bottles) commemorates the 20th anniversary of the “Peat Monster.”
Nose : smoky-hospital, barley malt, burnt rubber, vanilla, lemons, green apples, white pepper, ginger, traces of seaweed and oak.
Palate : slightly oily, Meyer lemons and lemon tart, seaweed salad, vanilla, salted nuts, white pepper, a dash of nutmeg and a whiff of peat smoke.
Finish : long, sweet-salty-smoky, with notes of lemon, vanilla salt, white pepper, a drop of tar and oak.
