Fred Laing's XOP series debuted in 2014, a dozen or so months after the division of Douglas Laing & Co.'s assets between the two Laing brothers.
XOP stands for Xtra Old Particular and refers to the finest single malt and single grain casks from the family stock. This Ledaig 25 years old is a whisky distilled in May 1997 and aged for a quarter of a century in a refill hogshead cask no. DL 17250. Bottled in March 2023 at cask strength (43.8% abv), natural colour and unchill-filtered in an edition limited to 200 bottles. (Official tasting note.)
Aroma: tar melted by summer heat, sea bay, peat smoke and crunchy cereal flakes.
Taste: on the palate, lots of drying sea salt, a bit of ash and soot, and sweet spices and grilled specialties.
Finish : long, with notes of burnt toast, coal dust, vanilla and barley sugar.
