The company was founded in 1730 in London by Henry Burmester and John Nash. Initially involved in the grain trade. Then in 1750 they moved to Vila Nova de Gaia and began exporting port to Great Britain and Europe. Over the years the company has developed, having good and bad moments, largely dictated by the geopolitical situation and ongoing wars, although its philosophy has remained unchanged to this day. It has also remained in the hands of one family all this time, thanks to which knowledge and experience are passed down from generation to generation, resulting in products of the highest quality, gaining recognition all over the world.
In 1992, the company also began producing wines under the DOC Douro appellation, which quickly gained acceptance around the world like port. Burmester places great emphasis on the unique character of its wines, thanks to which it offers characteristic products that are suitable for every occasion – private and professional.
Burmester 40 Year Old Porto Tawny
Wine made from the traditional varieties of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cao and Tinta Barroca. After manual harvesting, the grapes are vinified and macerated in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Then it goes to oak barrels for different periods of time, where the age indicated on the label is the average of the blend of all the wines. On the nose it is very intense and elegant, full of dried fruit aromas, accents of honey and spices. On the palate it is dense but well-structured and velvety, excellent flavors of fruit and vanilla with balanced acidity. The finish is long and intense, with a lasting combination of oak and ripe fruit notes.
It tastes best served at a temperature of 14-16 degrees. In culinary combinations, it will work well with foie gras-based appetizers, rich desserts with caramel and chocolate, as well as the addition of dried and candied fruit. It will also go well with high-quality Chevre cheeses.
