Special Releases is a limited series of Diageo whiskies released every autumn.
It debuted in 2002 and is composed of the finest single malt and single grain casks from the group's portfolio, bottled in a cask strength version without chill filtration. The 2022 release included 7 single malts (Mortlach NAS, Oban 10 years old, Talisker 11 years old, Clynelish 12 years old, Lagavulin 12 years old, Singleton of Glen Ord 15 years old, Cardhu 16 years old) and one single grain whisky, Cameron Bridge 26 years old. The Mortlach presented here, the only whisky in the composition without an age statement, after basic maturation in refill casks, finished in port, red muscat and so-called virgin oak casks. The whisky was bottled at 57.8% abv.
Nose: brown sugar, honeycomb, grilled pineapple, plums, raspberries, cherries, stewed apples, nougat, milk chocolate, black pepper, cinnamon, notes of tobacco and oak.
Palate : sweet and spicy, caramel, honey, toffee, chocolate, pears, cherries, orange zest, licorice, black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and traces of beef broth.
Finish: long, with notes of dried herbs, spices, raisins, vanilla, honey and oak tannins.
