Knockando Distillery was built in 1898 by John Thompson and is currently owned by Diageo.
In the early years of operation, the distillery distilled only in winter using barley hayed in spring, and subsequent owners called each year of distillation a “season.” This tradition continues to this day, with official Knockando editions including both an age statement and a vintage. The Knockando presented here is, in our opinion, the first Master Reserve edition, which remains in the company’s core offering to this day in the 21-year-old version. The whisky used in the blend, distilled in 1979, spent over two decades in butt barrels stored in the coolest part of the warehouse (low temperature slows down maturation). Knockando is one of the key ingredients in the original J&B blend formula developed in the 1930s.
