The name Whiskey Velvet Cap refers to the velvet cap traditionally worn by jockeys during steeplechases.
It debuted in 1880 in the offer of the Thomas Power & Co. company and since 2020 belongs to the Blackwater Distillery. The latter was established in 2014 by Peter Mulryan in Cappoquin, County Waterford; since 2018 its headquarters is in Ballyduff, County Kerry. Blackwater is equipped with three Italian stills and produces single malt and single pot still whiskey, it also deals with blending. The Velvet Cap presented here was aged in red Bordeaux barrels and hit the market in 2022.
Aroma: barley malt, red currants, cherries, apples, milk fudge, caramel, white pepper, a touch of cocoa and oak.
Palate : red berries, plums, vanilla, toffee, chocolate bar, roasted peanuts, allspice and a pinch of pepper.
Finish: medium long, with notes of red berries, stewed plums, caramel, vanilla, oak tannins and pepper.
