Fred Laing’s Old Particular series debuted in September 2013, shortly after the division of the assets of Douglas Laing & Co. between the two Laing brothers.
It is the equivalent of the Old Malt Cask range, which is owned by the newly formed Hunter Laing & Co and chaired by Stewart. Old Particular comprises single malt and single grain whiskies bottled in single cask. The Talisker 12 year old presented here was distilled in November 2009 and aged in a refill hogshead cask (DL 15637). Bottled in March 2022 at 48.4% abv and non-chill-filtered in an edition of 347 bottles. Talisker is the second best-selling single malt in the Diageo portfolio after Singleton, with annual sales of over 3.3 million bottles (2020).
Nose : peat smoke, damp earth and forest floor, sea breeze, freshly ground pepper, vanilla, lemon peel, notes of licorice and oak.
Palate: slightly oily, seaweed salad, barley malt, salted peanuts, lemon jam, vanilla, honey, dried apples, lapsang souchong tea and charred oak.
Finish: long, with notes of barley malt, sea breeze, lemon peel, smoked ham, salted caramel, vanilla and peat smoke.
