Renowned distribution company Douglas Laing & Co. was owned by brothers Stewart and Fred Laing until 2013, but after 40 years of success the brothers decided to split the company assets and operate separately.
The Old Malt Cask range is now owned by Hunter Laing & Co., of which Stewart is chairman. The Mortlach shown here was distilled in June 2008 and spent over 14 years in a refill hogshead cask, HL 19622. Bottled in July 2022, non-chill-filtered at 50% ABV, in an edition of 310 bottles. The first of seven distilleries, Mortlach Distillery, based in Dufftown, was founded in 1823. Now owned by Diageo, it has six stills and can produce 3.8 million litres of spirit per year (currently operating at around 75% capacity).
Nose : buttery croissant, raspberries, blackberries, licorice, roasted sunflower seeds, milk chocolate, a hint of vanilla, notes of pipe tobacco and oak.
Taste: malty, slightly waxy, vanilla, caramel, sweet bread, milk fudge, multi-berry jam, licorice, a pinch of white pepper and light notes of oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of barley malt, vanilla, caramel, berries, mint leaf and oak.
