"Hypernova" is, as we read on Wikipedia, "the explosion of the most massive stars, with masses several dozen times greater than the mass of the Sun; during the explosion, the star's core collapses directly into a black hole."
A similar explosion is expected to be caused by the tasting of Ardbeg Distillery's latest offering for Ardbeg committee members. The whisky was distilled from malt with a phenol concentration of 170ppm (this time the peat did not come from Islay) and bottled at 51% abv. Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg's creative director, assures us that the drink will not revolutionise the concepts of time and space, but will only show a different, intensified dimension of this iconic whisky.
Nose: peat smoke, burnt rubber, cigar ash, damp shells, sea salt, licorice, black pepper, new tennis balls and a fleeting trace of citrus.
Palate: True to the aroma, peat smoke, sea breeze, iodine, seaweed salad, barley malt, vanilla, green apples, lemon peel and a hint of smoked fish.
Finish: medium long, with notes of peat smoke and ash, iodine, lemon peel, pepper and a touch of tar.
