Renowned distribution company Douglas Laing & Co. was owned by brothers Stewart and Fred Laing until 2013, but after 40 years of success the brothers decided to split the company assets and operate separately.
The Old Malt Cask range is now owned by Hunter Laing & Co., of which Stewart is chairman. The Jura featured here was distilled in October 2007 and spent over 14 years in a refilled hogshead cask, reference HL 18866. Bottled in March 2022, unchill-filtered at 50% ABV, in an edition of 239 bottles. Jura Distillery is based on the island with which it shares its name. The distillery has two pairs of stills and can produce 2.4 million litres of distillate per year. The brand’s annual sales exceed 2 million bottles.
Nose : sea breeze, milk fudge, honey, vanilla, apples, lemon peel, salted peanuts, white pepper, a handful of fresh herbs and oak.
Palate : seaweed salad, milk fudge, salted caramel, vanilla, buttered toast, green apples, gooseberries, lemongrass, notes of pepper and oak.
Finish : medium long, with notes of vanilla, toffee, summer fruits, herbs, a pinch of sea salt and pepper and oak tannins.
