Fred Laing’s Old Particular series debuted in September 2013, shortly after the division of the assets of Douglas Laing & Co. between the two Laing brothers.
It is the equivalent of the Old Malt Cask series, which is owned by the newly formed Hunter Laing & Co. and of which Stewart is chairman. Old Particular comprises single malt and single grain whiskies bottled in single cask. The Balmenach 18 years old presented here was distilled in November 2003 and aged in a refill sherry butt (DL 15578). Bottled in February 2022 at natural colour, 48.4% abv and non-chill-filtered in an edition limited to 666 bottles.
Aroma: fruity, slightly floral, plums, blackberries, raisins, toffee, honey, cocoa powder, coconut flakes, allspice, notes of potpourri, sherry and oak.
Palate : chocolate-coated raisins, toffee, crème brûlée, prunes, orange peel, cinnamon, white pepper, dried herbs and oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of chocolate, toffee, prunes, raisins, cinnamon, cloves, sherry and oak.
