Fred Laing’s Old Particular series debuted in September 2013, shortly after the division of the assets of Douglas Laing & Co. between the two Laing brothers.
It is the equivalent of the Old Malt Cask series, which belongs to the newly formed Hunter Laing & Co and of which Stewart is chairman. Old Particular comprises single malt and single grain whiskies bottled almost exclusively in single cask. The Dailuaine 17 years old presented here was distilled in January 2005 and aged in a sherry butt (DL 15591). Bottled in February 2022 at natural colour, 48.4% ABV and unchill-filtered in an edition limited to 695 bottles.
Aroma : sun-drying hay and straw, honey-roasted nuts, vanilla cream, coconut flakes, toffee, milk chocolate, raisins, cinnamon, cloves and oak.
Taste : honey, chocolate-coated raisins, apricot jam, plums, golden syrup, buttery croissant, cappuccino, a pinch of allspice and a slight bitterness of oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of toffee, caramel, candied citrus peel, milk chocolate, a touch of spice and oak.
