- The XOP range was introduced in 2014 by Fred Laing, who parted ways with his brother and business partner Stewart the year before, splitting portfolio of Douglas Laing & Co.
Product description
Fred Laing's XOP series debuted in 2014, a dozen or so months after the division of Douglas Laing & Co.'s assets between the two Laing brothers.
XOP stands for Xtra Old Particular and refers to the finest single malt and single grain casks resting in the family’s stockpiles. The Caol Ila 40 years old presented here was distilled in June 1979 and aged for over four decades in a refill hogshead cask (DL no. 13741). Bottled in November 2019 at cask strength (50.1% abv) and non-chill-filtered in a limited edition of just 232 bottles. (Producer’s tasting note.)
Nose : Reminiscent of the archetypal coastal, beach and nautical style of Islay, with seaweed and floating wooden logs.
Taste : sea breeze full of iodine, chimney soot and barley malted with peat smoke.
Finish: …and all this leads to a spicy, warming and slightly smoky finish.
