In 2020, Parisian La Maison du Whisky, in collaboration with Signatory Vintage, launched the Chess Investigation Series.
There have been seven Caol Ila editions to date, with the latest, The Culprit, released in 2021. It is the oldest of the chess whiskies, distilled in 2007, aged in ex-bourbon hogsheads and finished in a first-fill Oloroso sherry butt. Previous editions have come from ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks, and have also featured whiskies finished in a Sauternes and Burgundy cask, previously used to mature Ballechina. The Caol Ila The Culprit presented here was bottled at 46% abv, with 891 bottles released.
