The construction of Tsunuki Distillery, the second distillery of Hombo Shuzo, started in December 2015 and the distillery went into operation in October the following year.
The first single malt expression, Tsunuki the First, was launched in April 2020. The distillery is located at Kagoshima and equipped with a single pair of stills produces peated and un-peated spirit. Here we have Tsunuki whisky distilled in 2017 and aged in first fill bourbon barrel # 124 in the own warehouse. (The distillery keeps conducting experiments with maturation, part of its whisky is aged at sister distillery Shinsu and part in the island of Yakushima). The whisky was bottled at natural strength of 60% abv in 2021 exclusively for the Parisian retailer La Maison du Whisky with an outrun of 200 bottles.
Nose: malty and pretty spicy, black pepper, cinnamon, licorice, vanilla, sweet cereals, apples, lemon peel, vanilla, oat cakes, dried flower petals and peat.
Palate: vanilla, milk chocolate, salted caramel, apples, gooseberries, peaches, quince jam, cinnamon, clove, licorice, peat and hints of oak.
Finish: long, with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, clove, licorice, fresh herbs, tobacco and peat smoke.
