Built in 1815, the Laphroaig Distillery is now owned by Beam Suntory.
Equipped with seven stills, the distillery produces around 3.3 million liters of distillate per year, and the local single malt records annual sales of over 4 million bottles (2019) and has been the most popular whisky from Islay for years (it ranks seventh in single malt sales statistics, just behind Balvenie). The vast majority of Laphroaig's stock is matured in bourbon casks, but from time to time editions aged or finished in sherry casks appear on the market. The 10-year-old presented here debuted in 2021 and contains whisky aged in American oak casks and finished in Oloroso sherry casks for 12 to 16 months.
Nose : peat smoke, iodine and sherry, grilled bacon, caramel, honey, dark chocolate, coffee beans, raisins, dried plums, notes of cinnamon and tobacco.
Palate: peat smoke, iodine, grilled pork neck, honey, salted caramel, maple syrup, dried plums and cherries, raisins, black pepper, a mixture of dried herbs and oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of peat smoke, dried dark fruits, dark chocolate, black pepper, tobacco and leather.
