Auchentoshan Distillery, based near Glasgow, is a model Lowlands distillery where every drop of whisky is triple distilled.
The distillery has been producing whisky since 1823, and since 1984 it has belonged to the Morrison Bowmore company, which is currently under the full control of the Japanese concern Beam Suntory. Auchentoshan 18 years old debuted in 2008 and was originally composed of distillates aged in bourbon barrels. In its latest incarnation, it hits the market described by the producer as "Vivid & Indulgent" or "colorful and generous" and is a blend of bourbon and sherry barrels. Annual sales of Auchentoshan currently exceed 1.7 million bottles.
Nose : honeycomb and vanilla marshmallow, orange peel, dried figs, pineapples, sultanas, hazelnuts, notes of cinnamon and pepper and a trace of pipe tobacco.
Palate: caramel, honey, milk chocolate, raisins and sultanas, black cherries, orange jam, roasted nuts and almonds, lemongrass, a bit of pepper and oak.
Finish: quite long, with notes of honey, chocolate, mixed nuts, dried fruit, pepper, nutmeg and oak.
