Product description
The story of Varela Hermanos S.A. and Abuelo rum dates back to 1908, when a Spanish immigrant, Don José Varela Blanco, started the first San Isidro sugar factory in the Panama town of Pesé.
Distillation of spirit from fermented sugar cane juice commenced there in 1936. The Abuelo brand was launched in 1976, when a new, modern spirit distillation line, together with modern, stainless steel distillation column system, was installed there. Today Varela Hermanos S.A. is one of the leading spirits manufacturers in Panama. It is also one of the very few that run their own sugar cane plantations.
Abuelo Añejo 12 Años is one of three basic expressions in the manufacturer’s official lineup. At the same time, it is the oldest expression from among the official range. Its components matured for 12 years in oak casks that previously held American bourbon. Its bouquet offers notes of caramel, vanilla, some fruits, bananas, orange peel, honey, spices and a hint of oak.
