Komagatake is a single malt produced at Mars Shinsu Distillery, the highest distillery in Japan (798 m above sea level).
It is based in the village of Miyada, Nagano Prefecture, in the picturesque Japanese Alps. In 2011, after a break of almost 20 years, it resumed whisky production, using both "unpeated" malt and three types of "peated" malt - with a concentration of phenol compounds of 3.5 ppm, 20 ppm and 50 ppm. In 2021, the fourth edition of Mars Komagatake whisky was launched, aged in the company's warehouse located on the island of Yakushima (southern Poland). The whisky was aged in bourbon barrels and bottled at 56% abv without chill filtration, and the edition consisted of 5,208 bottles.
Nose : honey, vanilla, caramel, peaches, apricots, oranges, bananas, buttery croissant, a hint of tobacco and a distant trace of smoke.
Palate: subtly smoky, honey, vanilla cream, toffee, banana cake, oranges, tangerines, milk chocolate, a pinch of salt and a hint of licorice.
Finish : quite long, with notes of vanilla, honey, milk fudge, fruit candy, oak and delicate smoke in the background.
