Highland Park Distillery is based in Orkney's capital, Kirkwall, and produces around 2.5 million litres of distillate per year using two pairs of stills.
Historically, Highland Park has played a key role in global blends such as Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse, with 75% now being released as a single malt. The brand has enjoyed a successful decade, with sales increasing by over 100%, reaching 2.2 million bottles in 2019. The Highland Park presented here was distilled in September 1997 and spent 21 years in a refilled hogshead cask, DL 13083. Bottled in March 2019 at 51.9% abv in Douglas Laing's prestigious Xtra Old Particular series, in an edition of 298 bottles.
Nose : slightly smoky, brown sugar, heather honey, orange peel, lemongrass, allspice, mint leaf, damp chalk and leaves and a trace of wax.
Palate : bitter orange jam, honey, vanilla, salted caramel, buttered toast, nutmeg, cinnamon, candied ginger and a little smoke.
Finish : long, slightly smoky and mineral, with notes of honey, lemon and orange peel and toasted oak.
