Product description
Mountain Laurel Spirit is based in Bristol, eastern Pennsylvania, a town considered the birthplace of the “original” American whiskey.
The company was founded in 2010 by Herman C. Mihalich and John S. Cooper with the mission of recreating the original, pre-prohibition style of Pennsylvania rye whiskey. In the early 20th century, American rye whiskey had two unique styles: the so-called "Pennsylvania Rye", distilled from a high rye mash, and the "Maryland Rye", a sweeter, lower rye mash. Dad's Hat's recipe lists 80% rye, 15% malted barley, and 5% malted rye. The "straight rye" version presented here is bottled with the alcohol content raised to 47.5% abv.
Aroma : spicy-herbal, strong rye notes, pepper, mint, dried dill, caramel, vanilla, cocoa powder and a pinch of cinnamon.
Taste : consistent with the aroma, rye bread toast, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, cloves, black pepper, a mixture of dried herbs and traces of cedar.
Finish : quite long, slightly alcoholic, with notes of black pepper, mint, cinnamon, caramel, licorice and oak.
