In 2019, Douglas Laing & Co. celebrated the tenth anniversary of the launch of Big Peat Blended Islay Malt.
Big Peat was the forerunner of the Remarkable Regional Malts series, which now comprises five blended malts reflecting the character of Scotland’s six whisky regions. In ten years, the whisky has gained immense popularity and thousands of devoted followers around the world. According to Fred Laing, director of Douglas Laing & Co., “sales of the Big Peat brand have grown by an average of 29% per year since its launch.” The 12-year-old version was released in 2020 and was the first age-stated version to be included in the core range.
Nose: beach bonfire, seaweed, forest floor, limes, green apples, brown sugar, vanilla, licorice, salted peanuts and a whiff of peat smoke.
Palate: sea breeze, peat smoke, seaweed salad, grapefruit, blood oranges, vanilla, cloves, herbal blend, toasted sesame seeds and oak.
Finish: quite long, with notes of smoke and ash, sea salt, white pepper, a touch of citrus and vanilla and oak.
