In 1999, Edrington Group, then owner of Bunnahabhain, reduced distilling to just a few weeks a year.
However, just four years later, Burn Stewart Distillers took over the distillery and turned its fortunes around. In 2010, two major changes were made to the official editions – the chill filtration was abandoned and the alcohol content was raised to 46.3%. The 25-year-old, which debuted in 2005, immediately won a gold medal at the annual San Francisco fair, and by 2016 had three gold medals and one silver. Since 2017, Bunnahabhain 25 years old has been bottled as a small batch edition. It is made using distillates aged in first and refill bourbon casks and sherry casks.
