Wemyss is one of the noble families of the Lowlands, related to Lord Macduff, ruler of Fife.
Wemyss Malts was founded in 2005 by William Wemyss, who owned vineyards in Australia and Provence. The company uses an original marketing strategy, with whiskies offered by them having names that correspond to their aromatic and flavor profiles. The Bowmore presented here, described as "Candied Violets," is a whisky distilled in 1988 and aged in a single hogshead cask for over three decades. Bottled at 46% abv in 2020 in an edition of 240 bottles.
Nose: slightly smoky and floral, violets, lavender, sea breeze, wet beach sand, orange peel, cantaloupe, vanilla, shortbread biscuits, lemongrass, a pinch of pepper and oak.
Palate: sea breeze, vanilla, milk fudge, nectarines, oranges, passion fruit, lemongrass, white pepper, oak and peat smoke in the background.
Finish: long and pleasantly smoky, with notes of vanilla, citrus, a pinch of sea salt, oriental spices and oak.
