Following the success of the ‘Element Collection’, Douglas Laing & Co. announced another limited-edition whisky collection in its popular ‘Old Particular’ series in June 2020. The Balance is the first of its new ‘Spiritualist Series’, a whisky that strikes the perfect balance between peat smoke and fruity sweetness; two more releases are due by the end of the year. The company won’t reveal which Islay distillery the whisky comes from, except that it was distilled in November 2005 and aged for 14 years in a refill hogshead. This single cask release was bottled at cask strength (53.2% abv) and unchill-filtered, and comprised 325 bottles.
Nose: smoky-fruity-salty, lemons, oranges, passion fruit, quince jam, honey, cotton candy, cocoa, sea salt, wet stones, tarred ropes and a bit of ash.
Palate: peat smoke, tangerines, lemons, pink grapefruits, salted butter toast, vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted nuts, traces of ash and oak.
Finish : long, with notes of peat smoke, citrus, milk chocolate, vanilla, toffee, salted nuts and lemon zest.
