Ilegal Mezcal was founded by John Rexer, who previously smuggled mezcal for his bar, Cafe No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala.
The brand appeared on the market in 2005 and has enjoyed ever-increasing success since then. In 2017, part of the shares of Ilegal Mezcal were bought by the Bacardi group. Ilegal Mecal is produced using traditional methods, in the town of Tlacolula in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, based on the Espadin agave (Agave angustifolia). It is distilled in traditional copper stills. Joven type mezcal is not aged in oak barrels, but bottled immediately after distillation.
Aroma: Smoke, pepper, spices, citrus.
Taste : Citrus sweetness, delicate smoke, black pepper, mineral accents, spices.
Finish: Short, slightly smoky and mineral.
