In the early October 2019 Bruichladdich Distillery launched the 10th series of their super heavily peated Octomore brand featuring four expressions.
According to the press release the latest Octomore series is an exploration of the realms of ‘softer smoke’. Indeed, 10th Series consist of “less peated” Octomores distilled from malt ranging from 88 to 114ppm phenols. Octomore Edition 10.3 was distilled in 2013 from 100% Octomore Farm grown Concerto barley malted to specification of 114ppm phenols. The whisky was aged in first fill white American oak barrels sourced from Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, Buffalo Trace and Jack Daniel’s distilleries for 6 years and bottled at 61.3% abv with an outrun of 24,000 bottles.
Nose: smoky and slightly medicinal, sea breeze, sea shells, moist hay, bunch of fresh herbs, vanilla, crème brûlée, lime jelly, salted nuts and hints of oak.
Palate: peat smoke, honey, vanilla, brown sugar, lemons, grapefruits, gooseberries, pears, dash of pepper, sea salt and hints of iodine.
Finish: long, with notes of peat smoke, sweet pastries, vanilla, cocoa, black pepper, cloves and oak.
