In spring 2019, Balvenie Distillery announced a new whisky series, the Balvenie Stories Collection. It consists of three whiskies – The Sweet Toast of American Oak, The Peat Week and A Day of the Dark Barley.
The first on the list is the creation of Kelsie McKechnie, the 25-year-old assistant to David Stewart, the legendary Balvenie maltster, who is being groomed by the master to take over his domain. Aged for 12 years in bourbon barrels, the whisky was poured into virgin American oak barrels specially prepared by Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky. The barrels were given a long, slow roast before being sent to the distillery for another roast to “release the maximum aromas and flavours”.
Nose: sweet barley malt, vanilla extract, brown sugar, lemon jam, coconut flakes, candied ginger, cinnamon and toasted oak.
Palate: vanilla, milk fudge, toffee, honey, candied orange and lemon peel, milk chocolate, notes of cinnamon, cloves and toasted oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of vanilla, honey, toffee, citrus, a bit of cinnamon and cocoa powder and oak.
