For the past 12 years, Balblair single malt has been released in vintage versions and this strategy has boosted sales of the brand to around 100,000 bottles per year.
In early 2019, the distillery returned to age-based editions, with the so-called vintages set to experience limited editions. The new core range lists four versions – 12, 15, 18 and 25 years old, all bottled at 46% ABV. The new strategy also means a change to the label (while maintaining the current bottle shape), including the use of a new font, which is a “contemporary adaptation of the font used on the old board at the entrance to the distillery”. Balblair 18 years spent its main maturation period in bourbon casks, and finished in fresh sherry butts.
Nose: pronounced notes of sherry, toffee, pears, nectarines, raisins, prunes, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, hints of leather and sherry-soaked oak.
Taste: pleasantly balanced, dried plums and apricots, orange jam, honey, toffee, vanilla cream, nut nougat, notes of cocoa, pepper and oak.
Finish : quite long, with notes of raisins, dried plums, dark chocolate, caramel, oak and a bit of spices.
