In 2017 Highland Distillery introduced Viking Legend series in partnership with Jim Lyngvild, renowned designer, who can trace his lineage back to the Viking era.
Volknut is the second whisky in the series following Valkyrie; it is made with a small amount of Orkney-grown Tartan barley, has a “slightly higher phenolic level” than Valkyrie and was matured predominantly in Sherry seasoned American oak casks. The word “valknut” is a neologism – it is formed in modern times through combination of “valr” (the slain) and “knut” (knot), what could be translated to “knot of those killed in battle”. It is a Viking symbol of three interconnected triangles used in Norse mythology to represent these honorable warriors.
Nose: pleasantly smoky and fruity, oranges, prunes, raisins, honey, vanilla, pepper, cloves, hints of heather, hay and sherried oak.
Palate: slightly oily, peat smoke, cigar ash, oranges, raisins, peanut butter, honey, cinnamon, black pepper and hints of aniseed.
Finish: long, fruity and smoky, with notes of candied orange peel, black pepper, nutmeg, candied ginger and oak.
