The formula for Ransom Rye, Barley, Wheat presented here is malted and unmalted rye, malted and unmalted barley, and malted wheat. The whiskey is distilled in a copper still and blended with distillate from MGP’s Indiana distillery (24%), re-distilled on site. Maturation takes place in 60-gallon French oak barrels, usually Pinot Noir, for about two years. In 2017, Ransom Rye, Barley, Wheat won a silver medal at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition, and its name (“Ransom”) refers to the debts Tad Seestedt incurred to start the business.
Aroma: fruity and herbal, apricots, bananas, raspberry jam, buttered toast, pine needles, geranium, fennel, pepper, a bit of vanilla and toffee.
Palate: mild, forest berries, raisins, baked apples, vanilla, cocoa powder, sweet cereals, a handful of garden herbs and a hint of tobacco.
Finish: medium long, with notes of baked apples, mixed berry jam, dark chocolate, hazelnuts and herbs.
