Blair Athol Distillery is based in Pitlochry in the Mid Highlands. It began in 1798 as the Aldour Distillery and has been known as its current name since 1825.
The plant belongs to Diageo and is equipped with two pairs of stills and produces around 2.6 million liters of alcohol per year, most of which goes into Bell's blends. In 2017, the company included Blair Athol for the first time in its prestigious annual Special Releases. This limited edition (5,514 bottles) contains whisky distilled in 1993 and aged in sherry casks for 23 years. Like every whisky in this series, Blair Athol was bottled at cask strength (58.4% abv) and without chill filtration.
Nose : strong notes of sherry, raisins, dried figs, plum jam, roasted nuts, toffee, honey, a bit of pepper and cloves and lots of pine needles.
Palate : rich and powerful, orange jam, chocolate-covered cherries, raisins, toffee, caramel, black tea, a touch of pepper and tobacco.
Finish: long, with notes of raisins, dried plums, toffee, salted caramel, dark chocolate and oak.
