- Akashi whisky is a product of Eigashima Distillery founded in 1888 to produce sake; in 1919 they obtained license to produce whisky but it took them more than four decades to get started.
Product description
Akashi Whisky is a product of the Eigashima (White Oak) Distillery, which has been operating since 1888. Initially producing sake, it obtained a license to produce whisky in 1919, but did not begin producing it until over 40 years later.
The current distillery was built in 1984 and distills whisky for seven months of the year, while the main source of income remains sake and shōchu. After several years of experimenting with malts with different concentrations of phenols, the company settled on a minimally peated (5 ppm) malt. The first single cask edition saw the light of day in 2013, presented here, from 2016, is a whisky aged for three years in American oak barrels and finished for another two in a sherry cask no. 61071. 144 bottles were filled.
Nose : slightly spirituous, walnuts, raisins, milk chocolate, buttered toast, bananas, cinnamon, nutmeg, traces of tobacco and oak.
Palate: milk chocolate, toffee, apples, cherries, a hint of coconut, trail mix, cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of leather.
Finish : medium long, with notes of toffee, raisins, cinnamon and pepper.
