Glendalough Distillery was founded in 2011 by five friends with a mission of ‘recapturing Ireland’s heritage of great spirit production’.
The distillery takes its name from a glacial valley in the Wicklow Mountains just south of Dublin, renowned for its medieval monastic settlement founded by St. Kevin in the 6th Century (his silhouette adorns the whiskey label). Glendalough’s adventure into gin began with the range of seasonal gins, the first of which was Summer 2014. The team members were picking ingredients from the wilds surrounding the distillery and distilled them the very next day to retain most of their essentials. After several runs they decided to work on all season gin and Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin was born. The main botanicals are juniper, angelica, coriander, bitter almonds, orris root, yarrow and orange peel with addition of seasonal gorse flower (spring), elderflower (summer), fraughan berries (fall) and sloe (winter). Glendalough Distillery also produces poitín and bottles whisky sourced from Cooley Distillery.
Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin reveals notes of forest floor, wild flowers, licorice, autumn berries, herbs and juniper and hints of elderflower and pine needles. It works perfectly with Martini and French 75 as well as with most tonics.
