Macallan Edition No. 3, the third release in wood-focused edition series, is all about aroma, an integral part of whisky tasting experience.
This time the Macallan master distiller Bob Dalgarno teamed with master perfumer Roja Dove. Dove nosed and described distinctive aromas in particular oak casks, which Dalgarno then used to select whiskies for Edition No. 3. Six types of casks were selected – 1st fill Hudosa butts (American oak), 2nd fill butts (European and American oak), 1st fill Tevasa butts and puncheons (European oak), 1st fill bourbon hogsheads (American oak), 1st fill Tevasa hogsheads (European oak) and 1st fill bourbon barrels (American oak). Edition No. 3 was bottled at 48.3% abv with 250 000 bottles available globally.
Nose: very complex, vanilla custard, toffee, milk chocolate, oranges, cherries, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, fresh oak and bouquet of dried flowers.
Palate: ripe pears, apples and apricots, toffee, crème brûlée, cacao, candied ginger, cinnamon rolls, touches of leather and oak.
Finish: long, fruity and sweet, vanilla cream, caramel, cherries, apples, milk chocolate and touch of oak.
